We Did It!

Hey everyone,

Well! Today is the day. Today is the final day of ONE YEAR. Today we read Revelation 21-22 and finish our journey together through the bible.

I hope this has been a positive experience for everyone. I also hope it has a created a passion in you for the scriptures and the story of God!

If you are behind, no sweat! We encourage you to keep going. Even if it takes you another year its great to read the bible from cover to cover at least once in your life!

If you have any feedback for me please send me an e-mail. The hope is that we could lead the entire church through an exercise like this in the near future.

It’s been fun!

Grace + Peace,

Dru

Revelation

Revelation

There are always a ton of questions when it comes to the book of Revelation. This is to be expected with the strange, apocalyptic nature of the book. There is also the tension in the fact that there is a lot of symbolism as well as imagery relating to the empire that is ruling the world (Rome) at the time when John receives this revelation.

One person asked, "There are some spots in red writing, were those actually Jesus' words? What about the parts with all of the wings covered in eyes? Is this supposed to be literal? Is this a description of heaven?"

This is a good question! A few things to help us. First, yes, the portions that are in red are attributed to Jesus!

Second, the imagery is complex, especially being people who do not live during the era of when this was written. There is a book that is helpful in reading Revelation that I suggest everyone read if they want a good understanding. It's called Reading Revelation Responsibly by Michael Gorman. You can get it HERE.

Third, Tim Mackie gives a good overview of Revelation. I encourage everyone to take 7 minutes and watch his primer. It is below!

Fourth, I encourage you to hang tight because over October and November at City View we are going to be looking at Revelation. I can promise a couple things. One, all our questions won't be answered! Two, we are going to work to bring context to the big picture of Revelation and what it means for us. The series will be called Follow The Lamb.

I hope that helps! Two more days and we've completed our journey together!

August Reading Plan

August Reading Plan

Hi everyone!

August is here! Hard to believe. Two months to go in our journey reading through the scriptures together!

We just finished reading through 1 Corinthians. Yesterday we started 2 Corinthians. And over the month of August we will also storm through Paul’s letters Galatians, Ephesians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 + 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, and we will start Hebrews together. BIG MONTH!!

As we read these together remember that they are letters, not books. This is real life Paul, writing to real life early churches, with real problems and issues that they are trying to work out. There is division between Jews and Gentiles. There are sin issues and bad theology in some of the churches. The gentile community doesn’t have a Judeo worldview and is learning about Jesus. There are lots of things going on as we read!

You can find the August reading plan by clicking HERE.

The Book of Acts

The Book of Acts

Yesterday we started the book of Acts.

One of the reasons we read the book of Luke and are now reading the book of Acts back to back is because Luke is both the author of the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts. Basically, Luke is the story of the life and work of Jesus and Acts is the story of the work of the Holy Spirit in the church.

Below are two video primers for Acts. The first is on Luke-Acts, showing us the connection between these books. The second helps give us a foundation on the book of Acts. Take a few minutes and watch them. They will be of help to you!

John + Luke

John + Luke

Hey everyone!

We are continuing our journey through the gospels!

We are finishing up John this week and starting Luke as well.

Now you may be asking, "Why would we read John before Luke? Isn't it the other way around?"

Obviously, in our Bibles Luke comes before John. Yet, because Luke is both the writer of the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts, it is good to read those back-to-back. Basically Luke and Acts is one story with two volumes. Think of it as one series with two seasons (just trying to put it in 21st century language).

So we have been reading John and then will move into Luke-Acts!

With that said there is a video primer for John 1-12, John 13-21 and Luke 1-19 below. Take a few minutes and watch them as they will give you context as you read!

Hey everyone!!

Hope the reading is going well. This week we will get through the gospel of Matthew and on Sunday we start the gospel of Mark!

Below is a primer for the gospel of Mark. The beauty of the gospels is that we get four different perspective on the life of Jesus. Mark is a wonderful book! Watch below.

Kingdom and Messiah

Kingdom and Messiah

As we enter the NT there are two major themes we need to explore. One of them is the Kingdom of God, the very thing that Jesus himself talked about the most. The second is the the Messiah. What does it mean that Jesus was the messiah? How does this change the story?

There are two videos below that talk about these particular themes. Take a couple minutes and watch them! They are well worth your time. If you have any questions regarding these please let us know!

Next Get Together - Thursday, May 19

This is also a reminder that next Thursday, May 19 from 7-9pm we are getting together at our place! It is a perfect time to get together as we will transition from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Please make every effort to be apart of this evening. We committed to do this and I believe it will be beneficial to share with each other as to what we are learning and where we are at!

Have an amazing week!

Next Get Together - Thursday, May 12

I only heard from one person regarding a date for our next get together. So.. here is what we are going to do.

City View is now having SECOND THURSDAY every second Thursday of the month. With this in mind we are going to do our next ONE YEAR Get Together at SECOND THURSDAY at Royal View. The details are below:

Second Thursday - Thursday, May 12th
6.30-7.15 pm - Prayer
7.15-8.45pm - One Year Meeting

We really think it’s important that you are at this night. It’s perfect because it falls right as we conclude the Old Testament and move into the New Testament. We will talk about what we are learning, answer questions you have and look ahead to the New Testament. Make an effort to be there!

May Reading Plan

Can you believe May starts on Sunday? You can find the reading plan for May by clicking HERE.

Take note that we are almost to the end of the Old Testament! Also be aware that we are concluding our Old Testament reading with the books of 1+2 Chronicles. This is a great way to read it because 1+2 Chronicles is an overview of the events of the Old Testament.
